Title: Controller
Reports to: Associate Director
Starting Date: September 2000

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the world's endangered tropical forests. Our primary mission is to develop and promote economically viable and socially desirable alternatives to deforestation. These alternatives are designed in concert with local peoples to develop long-term, stable income for people living in or near forests. The Rainforest Alliance also educates the public about tropical forest conservation.

Summary of Position:
The Controller, as the accounting manager of the organization, provides direction, exercises control, and implements procedures on financial and related administrative matters, assists in developing annual operating plans and budgets, prepares and monitors cash requirement schedules.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Assist the Associate Director in giving direction, exercising control and implementing procedures on all financial matters to ensure the Rainforest Alliance's fiscal and fiduciary integrity, cash flow, accounting standards, and operations.

  • Develop departmental objectives, work plans, and task assignments for accounting and related administrative staff;
  • Develop and update accounting and financial management policy draft(s) for Associate Director and Executive Director consideration;
  • Develop and update accounting and financial operating procedures, including system for internal control; and,
  • Coordinate the auditing process, interface with auditors, and implement audit recommendations.
2. Oversee preparation and submission of financial reports to ensure management, donors, and regulatory agencies receive timely and complete information as required.
  • Prepare consolidated monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements;
  • Produce budget and cash flow reports monthly and special reports as required;
  • Oversee preparation and submission of budget and financial sections of proposals to donor agencies;
  • Assist with preparation of annual financial reports and budgets for presentation to the Executive Director and Board;
  • Prepare required regular and special reports for donor agencies as needed; and,
  • Oversee provision of financial and administrative information for annual filing of State registrations.
3. Provide general accounting oversight and oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting and related administrative functions to ensure Alliance finances are managed appropriately.
  • Manage and maintain the computerized accounting system as well as interface with Alliance certification programs' accounting and reporting systems;
  • Supervise accounting staff;
  • Supervise preparation of all required payroll, wage reports, and forms;
  • Reconcile G/L with account detail monthly;
  • Ensure proper separation of accounts and records for all donor agencies;
  • Allocate shared expenses to programs monthly;
  • Maintain adequate detail of deferred grant revenue;
  • Maintain detailed schedule of prepaid expenses;
  • Supervise timely recording of assets and depreciations to the fixed asset register;
  • Assure that annual budget data in entered into the accounting program and updated on a timely basis; and,
  • Provide accounting oversight for 403(b) plan.
4. Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years experience as a controller or Senior Accountant;
  • Degree in accounting or business administration, or a minimum of five years of related equivalent experience;
  • Professional familiarity with nonprofit or public sector accounting and reporting;
  • Professional familiarity with USAID or other US government agency grant reporting requirements;
  • Professional familiarity with at least one computer based accounting system and high level working knowledge of Microsoft Office or related programs;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Supervisory experience of junior accountants or bookkeepers;
  • Budget preparation and reporting experience; and,
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational abilities, ability to juggle multiple deadlines, sense of humor.

Salary commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits include 4 weeks vacation, summer schedule, health and dental coverage, and 403b retirement plan.
