Spring 2001 Internship Positions

Conservation Media Center Intern
(Location: New York City)
Positions Available: 1
(3-6 months)
The Conservation Media Center (CMC), based in Costa Rica, is the environmental news hub of the Americas. The program publicizes Latin American conservation efforts and issues, trains journalists in environmental reporting skills, and helps conservation leaders learn from their colleagues, share information about their projects, and design effective communications strategies.
Project: The CMC intern will be involved with the Eco-Index, a searchable almanac of current and past conservation projects in Mexico and Central America. Eco-Index is a new, Internet-based project and was launched in January 2001. The Web site is generated by a complex database into which projects descriptions, goals, achievements and lessons learned are entered. In addition, the Eco-Index will offer quality content including interviews with conservation leaders and foundation officers. Activities for which the intern will be responsible include: assist in marketing Eco-Index by identifying Online and print opportunities, encourage appropriate conservationists and students to fill out and send an Eco-Index questionnaire, edit and enter information from project questionnaires into the Access database and help compile information from interviews with conservationists and stories from the field.
Qualifications: Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented; knowledge of Microsoft Access and the Internet; good writing and proofreading skills. Interested in the Internet as a communications tool. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Minimum commitment of 8 hours a week.
Conservation Agriculture Program
Cut Flower & Fern Certification Intern

(Location: New York City)

The Conservation Agriculture Program works to reduce the environmental impact of tropical agricultural products. Launched by the Rainforest Alliance in 1992, the program develops economically viable alternatives for growers of crops to do business without doing damage to rainforests and other natural environments.
Project: The Conservation Agriculture Program is looking into the opportunity for developing a certification program for cut flowers and ferns. The intern will assist in logistics one day a week. He/she will assist in the organization of future meetings and workshops, specifically a workshop to be held in Miami, FL. Other duties include making entries into a stakeholders database, collection of stakeholders contact information and preparation of public information packets.
Qualifications: Strong organizational skills and knowledge of Microsoft Access, Word, PowerPoint and the Internet required. Undergraduate or graduate students. Knowledge of Spanish (for reading materials) a plus. Minimum commitment of 8-12 hours/ per week.
Communications Intern
(Location: New York City)

(3 months)
The Rainforest Alliance Communications Department uses communications as a marketing tool to help spread the word and gain involvement in Rainforest Alliance initiatives.
Project: The intern would be working with the Communications staff on a variety of tasks to improve and expand the Rainforest Alliance's Web site and educational materials as well as assisting with the department's general communications tasks. Work with Communications Associate on updating Web site content and increasing traffic to site, and use the Web as a general research tool for the department. Update educational and public information materials. Assist department with other communications tasks as needed.
Qualifications: Strong interest in Internet research and ability to conduct research online. Good writing and proofreading skills. Professional phone manner. Interest in public relations/communications as means of disseminating a conservation message. Minimum commitment of 8-12 hrs/ per week.
Development Intern
(Location: New York City)

(3 months - 1 year)
The Rainforest Alliance Development staff raises funds from private foundations, corporations, government agencies, individuals, and its members to support the conservation programs of the organization.
Project: The intern will assist the Rainforest Alliance with foundation, corporate, and government research and outreach. Responsibilities may include: Researching donors and prospects, preparing donor profiles, preparing proposal, report and information packages for submission to donors and prospects, assisting in the maintenance of Raiser's Edge fundraising database, and creating active donor files.
Qualifications: Self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented individual needed. Sound research skills, adeptness with the Internet, knowledge of libraries as research tools, and ability to interact professionally with donor prospects via the phone and e-mail required. Minimum commitment of 15 hours/ per week.
Special Events/Sponsorship Intern
(Location: New York City)

(3 months - 1 year)
The Rainforest Alliance Development Department raises funds to support the conservation programs of the organization. Special Events and Sponsorship, as part of the Development Department, raises funds through the coordination of events, such as the Annual Gala, Annual Smart Sounds Concert and auctions.
Project: The intern will work with the Special Events/Sponsorship department on both research projects and upcoming events. The research project will include prospecting corporations for general sponsorship and event specific sponsorship as well as tracking, coding and entering prospects into the database. The intern will also be involved in event coordination by prospecting auction donors and soliciting for item donations via the internet and phone calls, assisting in the coordination of mail lists and mailings, and assisting in the coordination of event logistics.
Qualifications: Detail-oriented, resourceful and creative individual needed. Candidate should be comfortable with Internet and phone research and solicitation, and possess an ability to interact professionally with potential donors. Minimum commitment of 15 hours/per week.
Catalyst Grants and Allies/Save It!
(Location: New York City)
Positions Available: 1
(6 months)
The Catalyst Grants program channels small grants to locally based, grassroots conservation groups that need a quick infusion of funds to meet an unexpected need or advance a promising initiative. Allies in the Rainforest is an easy way for individuals, school groups and classes, and community organizations to directly help grassroots conservation efforts in the tropics. Become an ally by supporting local groups in the tropics that are working to stop the destruction of the world's rainforests.
Project: Catalyst Grants is currently undergoing an evaluation of the program's impact on communities and tropical conservation. Over the last 13 years the Alliance has funded over 90 projects in 25 countries. The program is developing a simple, cost effective, culturally-appropriate method of evaluating projects that have received Catalyst grants. The Allies intern would be responsible for developing a questionnaire, in cooperation with the program manager, disseminating it to grant recipients and compiling the results. In addition, the intern would participate in the development of the Save It! education program by assisting in research into New Jersey-based conservation education opportunities and potential collaborators.
Qualifications: These activities are expected to be completed by March, 2001. Some of these tasks could be done from home. The ability to read and/or write in Spanish would be very helpful, but is not a requirement. Minimum commitment of 15-18 hours/ per week
