Position Title: SmartWood Regional Manager for British Columbia & Western Canada

Over the past 3-4 years, the SmartWood Program of the Rainforest Alliance has had the good fortune to work with two different individuals, Connie McDermott and Loy Jones, as SmartWood representatives for certification activities in British Columbia (BC). Currently Connie is continuing her doctoral work at UBC and Loy Jones recently moved to Dallas, Texas, where he is the new SmartWood coordinator for the Southern USA. SmartWood has also been able to work with a number of very talented assessors in BC, and we have been fortunate to be able to count on the very strong support of the Northwest Natural Resources Group (NNRG) of Port Townsend, Washington. Based on our experience in the region, and counsel from a number of informal advisors in BC, we believe we have reached a point where we need to invest in a more consistent long-term SmartWood presence in the region. Thus, SmartWood is looking for an individual to serve as its representative for certification activities in British Columbia, and potentially other provinces in Western Canada. This position could be part time or full time to start, on a consultant or employee basis.

The focus of the job is to coordinate all SmartWood activities in BC and potentially other provinces in Western Canada. A critical part of this effort will be to educate government, environmental organizations, industry and other landowners and stakeholders about FSC-approved SmartWood forest management and chain of custody certification. Key expected results would include:

  • Improved strategic guidance of SmartWood efforts in the region;
  • Improved SmartWood inputs into certification processes and related dialogues in the region;
  • Expansion of SmartWood certification business in the region; and,
  • Improved understanding of Rainforest Alliance's, and SmartWood's, special capabilities by all stakeholders.
This person would:
  • Develop and implement a regionally-based strategic SmartWood certification effort;
  • Perform customer service with SmartWood clients in the region.
  • Manage and/or perform (according to their technical capabilities) certification assessments and audits. Multidisciplinary assessment teams conduct these assessments and audits. A significant percentage of their time will be devoted to region-specific quality control for assessment processes, reports, and stakeholder follow-up.
  • Communicate with the environmental, government, industry, social and First Nations individuals and organizations with interest in certification in BC and western Canada.
  • Work with the FSC standards setting committees in BC and western Canada.
Qualifications:
  • Individuals with the highest degree of personal and professional credibility, and a willingness to be open-minded and analytical in working with all sectors to conserve and manage forests and support sustainable communities.
  • A strong belief in FSC and SmartWood certification.
  • Practical experience working in forests and/or with forest industry.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills.
  • Computer savvy.
Timeline: Please submit resume and cover letter with salary/daily rate history ASAP to Laura Terrall at SmartWood headquarters (lterrall@smartwood.org) or FAX 802-434-3116. We plan on moving quickly with this recruitment. If you have any questions, please send by email or FAX.
