Title: Human Resources & Bookkeeping Associate
Starting Date: September 2000
Reports to: Human Resources Manager & Accountant
Location: New York City Office

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests for the benefit of the global community. Our mission is to develop and promote economically viable and socially desirable alternatives to the destruction of this endangered, biologically diverse natural resource. This mission is pursued through education, research in the social and natural sciences, and the establishment of cooperative partnerships with businesses, governments, and local peoples. In addition to the New York headquarters, the Alliance has offices in Costa Rica and Vermont.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide direct support to the Manager of Human Resources. Specific duties:

  • Coordinate & implement the compensation/payroll and employee benefits administration including health & dental benefits, 403b retirement plan, life/ad&d coverage, short and long-term disability insurance, worker's compensation; * Record & monitor staff timesheets;
  • Provide assistance on compensation benefit packages, including compiling comparative salary data;
  • Coordinate internship program;
  • Assist with recruitments by distributing all job and internship announcements and arranging necessary interviews;
  • Additional projects and tasks as assigned by the Manager of Human Resources.
Provide direct support to the Accounting Department. Specific duties:
  • Manage and administer payroll for US & overseas staff; prepare general ledger entries and reconciliation of payroll bank account;
  • Assist with check processing;
  • Assist accountant in processing and gathering information for expense claims;
  • Assist with general filing and vendor file management;
  • Learn the current accounting system and bookkeeping functions in order to be able to carry out basic duties in accountant's absence;
  • Assist in preparation of monthly budget reports and annual budget;
  • Assist with other projects and task as assigned by the Accountant and Controller.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of basic bookkeeping and payroll processing;
  • Min. of 2 year's office experience; bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience in bookkeeping preferred;
  • Must have strong organizational skills and be able to work independently;
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and computer skills (Word ,Excel, Internet research);
  • Experience in human resources benefits/administration a plus;
  • Strong interest in the non-profit sector and Accounting and/or Human Resources administration.
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits include 4 weeks vacation, summer schedule, health and dental coverage, and 403b retirement plan.
