Position Summary
The Associate Director of Development/Major Gifts Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of individual major donor fundraising ($1,000+ gifts) for the organization including identification, research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects/donors. The Associate Director supervises a Development Assistant, manages the development department in the Development Director's absence and works closely with the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Identify individual major donor prospects with the capacity to give $1,000 or more, with emphasis on prospects with the capacity to give $25,000 or more. Contact/review sources for prospect identification such as publications, Board members, other volunteers, events and trips, etc.
- Coordinate research of major donors/prospects utilizing varying resources to gain information about donors/prospects such as libraries, face-to face meetings, the Internet, publications, contacts, volunteers, etc.
- Recruit prospects and donors to individual/corporate Canopy Associate program. Use program as recognition, cultivation and fundraising vehicle. Organize events and trips for Canopy donors and others as a way to cultivate their involvement and interest in RA. Cultivate non-canopy donors/prospects through additional means.
- Develop solicitation strategies and coordinate solicitations with DOD, ED and other appropriate staff/volunteers. Solicit donors in most appropriate way (face-to-face, in writing, electronically).
- Supervise administrative staff and processes associated with maintaining data/hard files for individual major donors. Ensure all gifts are acknowledged appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Develop, implement and administer RA planned giving program.
- Develop relationships with Board members and coordinate annual Board giving efforts with Development Committee Chair, ED and DOD.
- Supervise and motivate Development Assistant. Provide guidance, support, and opportunities for growth.
- Contribute to overall planning and growth of development department, support team efforts, and manage the department when the Development Director is unavailable.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Development.
Qualifications:
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- 10 years work experience, minimum 5 years major gifts experience.
- Demonstrated experience identifying, cultivating, and soliciting at least $500,000/year from major donors.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Articulate and persuasive communicator, both oral and written.
- Proficiency with computers - word processing (Word) and spreadsheets (Excel).
- Background in conservation or international development and understanding of related issues a plus.

Salary commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits include 4 weeks vacation, summer schedule, health and dental coverage, and 403b retirement plan. Excellent working environment.
