New Public Safety Building

The new Public Safety Building construction began in August 1998 with an estimated completion date of Spring 2000. Normal construction hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This new building will house both the Berkeley Police Department and the Administrative Offices of the Berkeley Fire Department, which are now located in separate buildings.

The Police Department is currently located in the Hall of Justice, which was dedicated in 1939. At the time, the Hall of Justice held not only the Police Department (107 Officers), but the City Attorney's Office and the Municipal Court.

Since 1939, our department has grown and the building now houses a Public Safety Dispatch Center, Jail facility and offices for 318 employees, which include Public Safety Dispatchers, Parking Enforcement Representatives, Police Service Assistants (Jailers, Crime Prevention and Property/Evidence Technicians), Animal Shelter employees, Records and Data Entry staff, Clerical employees, Community Service Officers and over 200 Police Officers.

Neighborhood Notes:
There are no anticipated impacts on the neighborhood beyond normal construction activities within the construction site.

The construction of the New Public Safety Building is moving ahead at a fast pace. The basement and first floor walls are completed and work has begun on the second floor.
