CLARK COTTON

Background and history

J.L Clark Cotton Company (Pty) Limited was incorporated in 1954 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Premier Group in 1976. During 1988 the name was changed to Clark Cotton and the company became a division of Premier Food Industries Limited. On the 1st August 1998 Premier Food Industries Limited was sold to National Cereal Industries (Pty) Ltd. Clark Cotton was excluded from this sale and again became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Premier Group and registered as Clark Cotton (Pty) Ltd.

OTK acquired Clark Cotton as a going concern with effect from 1 November 1998. Cotton production in South Africa has become of more importance to the farming industry as it acts as a hedge against low international maize and wheat prices. Clark Cotton is now proud to be part of a group that is a leader in the handling and processing of agriculture products.

Nature of business

Clark Cotton holds the position as the leading player in the South African ginning industry and has enjoyed many years of trading.

The company currently operates three ginneries and delinting processing plants in South Africa, one ginnery in Swaziland and two ginneries in Zambia, one of which was commissioned as recently as July 1998. Both ginneries in Zambia are situated on the same site in the Eastern Province in the town Chipata, formerly known as Fort Jamerson.

Clark Cotton adheres to a maintenance and upgrading system that ensures that our ginneries are always in a good running condition and with state of the art technology that is comparable to the best in the world.

Location of the ginneries

South Africa:
Marble Hall in the Northern Province
Modder River near Kimberley in the Northern Cape
Pongola in Kwa-Zulu Natal, close to the border with Swaziland

Swaziland:
Big Bend in the South East of Swaziland

Zambia:
Chipata in the Eastern Province near Malawi

The Marble Hall, Modder River and Pongola ginneries are the only installations in South Africa equipped to produce double delinted seed which is in much demand from oil expresses.

All the ginneries are equipped with additional lint cleaners to handle the 40% of the South African crop that is machine picked.
