Some of the worst passenger ship disasters
over the last four years include:
Year 2000 -
June 29 - INDONESIA - Only about
10 people survive when an Indonesian ferry, the Cahaya Bahari (Light
of the Ocean), with 290 fleeing refugees and almost 200 passengers,
sinks off the coast of Sulawesi.
June 22- CHINA - At least 130 die
when ferry Rong Jian, with about 220 people, capsizes on the Yangtze
River near Luzhou in Sichuan.
April 12 - PHILIPPINES - At least
138 drown after the ML Annahada sinks off Jolo island in the south.
1999 -
November 25 - CHINA - Only 22 survive
when the Dashun, with at least 308 aboard, founders and breaks up
in stormy waters off the port city of Yantai on the east coast.
May 8- BANGLADESH - Ferry MV Dwipkanya,
carrying some 400 passengers, sinks in a whirlpool during a storm
near Lakhsmipur, 175 km (110 miles) from Dhaka. At least 300 are
missing.
March 22 - SIERRA LEONE - At least
150 drown when overloaded motorised canoe capsizes off the town
of Tasso.
March 6 - SIERRA LEONE - More than
100 traders drown and around 100 go missing after their overloaded
boat sinks in rough seas off Freetown.
February 6 - INDONESIA - Only 20
are rescued from ferry Harta Rimba, carrying 325 passengers and
seven crew, which sinks in South China Sea near Tambelan islands,
north of Jakarta.
1998 -
September 18 - PHILIPPINES - Almost
200 die after the 13,935-ton MV Princess of the Orient sinks near
Manila. Almost 300 survivors are recovered.
June 12 - GUINEA-BISSAU - About
200 people fleeing fighting in Guinea-Bissau drown when they tried
to reach the Bijagos Islands off the coast of the West African state.
1997 -
September 8 - HAITI - Between 300
and 400 people believed dead in sinking of packed ferry bound for
the island of La Gonave.
September 1 - NIGERIA - Passenger
ferry Olodiama collides with tugboat off southeastern Nigeria. At
least 130 are missing and presumed drowned.
August 25 - NIGERIA - About 100
drown when two wooden boats collide off Nigeria's Niger delta.
1996 -
May 21 - TANZANIA - Tanzanian ferry
MV Bukoba capsizes on Lake Victoria near western town of Mwanza.
Only 114 survive out of about 1,000 estimated to have been on board.
January 19 - INDONESIA - Up to 338
believed to have died after ferry Gurita sank in heavy seas off
Banda Aceh. At least 55 confirmed dead, 238 listed as missing, 40
are rescued.
