Gentlemen:

Following Chapel services on 16 September 2007, a bronze plaque will be
dedicated to the memory of LTC James F. Coates, USA (Ret). As many of you
recall, LTC (and later COL, VFMA&C) Coates served as Tactical Officer,
Deputy Commandant of Cadets and Commandant of Cadets at Valley Forge until
his retirement in 1991 and subsequent promotion to the grade of Brigadier
General, VFMA&C. Many of us had the privilege of either knowing him when
we were cadets or, in my case, serving under him in the Tactical
Department. As you may know, Jim died this past year and is buried at
Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Several alumni attended
the graveside service.

This past Spring, the Alumni Association nominated BG Coates to be
posthumously recognized as an Honorary Alumnus, Class of 2007. His son Jeff
attended the Saturday Parade to receive the recognition on his father¹s
behalf.

Additionally, I encourage you to read the write-up by Jeff Conover ¹76 at
www.continentalonline.org entitled ³I Donned My Blues.² It is a
wonderful tribute to a fine leader.

I hope you will join me at Chapel services this Sunday to honor the memory
of BG Coates. The Chapel Speaker for that day will be the current
Commandant of Cadets, COL Thomas Medearis ¹66.

COURAGE, HONOR, CONQUER

John R. Rapp Œ74C
President, Alumni Association
