What is Sharp HealthCare?
Sharp HealthCare is the San Diego region's most comprehensive health care delivery
system. Sharp opened its first hospital, the Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital,
in 1955. Today the Sharp system includes four acute care hospitals, three specialty
hospitals, three medical groups, medical clinics, six urgent care centers, skilled nursing
facilities and a variety of other community health education programs and related
services.
Despite its considerable growth, Sharp continues to adhere to the goals established by
its founders. Sharp performed the community's first open heart surgery just a few years
after its original hospital opened. Sharp also founded the county's first health care
facility exclusively for women, established the first hospital-based alcohol and drug
treatment center, performed the area's first heart transplant and initiated the first use
of the artificial heart on the West Coast. A kidney and lung transplantation program was
begun in 1990 and more babies are born at Sharp hospitals than others in the region. |
