KERIKERI - was the pa site of the fearsome Maori warrior chief Hongi Hika who terrorised many tribes throughout the North Island in the early 1800's.
The two oldest surviving buildings in New Zealand, Kemp House and the Stone Store (built 1822) are both in Kerikeri.
Kerikeri's rich, fertile soil combined with the area's mild climate has produced an oasis for horticultural produce.
The area is also well known for its arts and crafts, numerous cafes and restaurants. KAWAKAWA MATAURI BAY WAITANGI PAIHIA - was once an early missionary centre.
The Church of St Paul now stands on the site of New Zealand's first church which was made from reeds.
Paihia is a popular destination for both local and overseas visitors. RUSSELL - Known as the Hell Hole of the Pacific in the days of the early European settlers.
Originally named Kororareka, the town was renamed as Russell in 1844. The town's Christ Church is the oldest surviving church in New Zealand.
Passenger ferries run regularly between Russell, and Paihia and Waitangi and a car ferry links Russell and Opua. DOUBTLESS BAY MANGONUI WHANGAROA HARBOUR - dominated by the stunning rock formation of St Paul, this beautiful harbour is the perfect place for big game fishing, cruising, snorkelling and diving. KAITAIA HOKIANGA - Hokianga-Nui-A-Kupe - The place of Kupe's great return.
The shores of the Hokianga were first visited by Kupe and his crew in their waka Matawhauroa around 950AD and is where Maori made their first settlement when they returned to New Zealand.
Also known as Te Kohanga o Te Tai Tokerau (the nest of the northern tribes), as most Maori trace their ancestry in New Zealand to the discovery and settlement of this harbour. CAPE REINGA - 2 hours from Kaitaia
