Information Exchange
Information exchange at AEL includes both giving and gathering information. The Resource
Center
offers free searches of the ERIC database and the Internet, access to specialized
periodicals, research syntheses, and information search packages on timely topics.
AEL also provides information through its newsletter The
Link, Policy Briefs, occasional papers, and other
publications that result from its work. In addition, Laboratory staff
are available to provide consultation on-line or by telephone.
Facilitating information gathering in the region is a key staff function. AEL resident directors
link with particular groups and associations concerned
about education. Also, an annual education issues forum, hosted in each state,
keeps AEL informed about issues in the region, helping the Laboratory provide timely
information and assistance.
Professional Development
Professional development opportunities have been mainstays of the Laboratory's work
over the years. Training is offered in two AEL-developed school improvement
processes--Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and
Thinking
(QUILT) and Interdisciplinary Teamed Instruction. AEL
provides professional development materials on such topics as authentic assessment, curriculum
integration, and teaching marginal learners.
Evaluation and Planning
As a research and development organization, AEL values data-based processes and decision
making. Evaluation of programs and systematic planning for future activities are large parts of
each
Laboratory-developed project. In addition, the Laboratory's expertise in planning, research, and evaluation is made available to educators
and others throughout the region on a contractual basis.
