  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996

  • National Provider Identifier
    Organizations with a need to enumerate providers have joined in an effort, begun by the HCFA in 1993, to establish a national system for identifying and uniquely enumerating health service providers. Also included is the following information and links: Record Format, Error/Warning code document, an Issue Paper and the Check Digit Formula.

  • National Health PlanID
    The National Health PlanID initiative, formerly known as the PAYERID, is an initiative authorized by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 to enumerate health plans. The National Health PlanID, being developed by HCFA, is a national program for the benefit of health plans, employers, and other health care participants in the United States. The National Health PlanID provides a standard plan identifier for efficient electronic data interchange (EDI) and health care administrative operations.

    Watch this space for information about the Notice of Proposed Rule Making to be published in the Federal Register. This Notice will provide an opportunity for public comment on HCFA’s proposal for the initiative.
