[Update: Dan posted a blog after this piece in good spirit. Very cool of him to take this in stride and laugh like I did.]
This is a rebuttal piece to "RSA Buzzword Bingo" (Feb 25, 2012) by Daniel Cornell, Principal at Denim Group. In his blog, Cornell creates some 'Bingo' cards to take along to the RSA Security Conference. RSA is well known for being the "Comdex of security conventions", where vendor hype and self-congratulation are the norm, and rational fact-based security gets shoved to the back burner. New trends spread like wildfire, giving way to the over-use and over-abuse of newly adopted buzz words. Last year we saw "APT" infest the conference, this year it was "Big Data". Doesn't much matter what they mean, or that they don't have a commonly accepted definition. Buy our shit!
Cornell's Bingo cards are not a new idea, many were joking about such a creation over 10 years ago at Defcon. It is also no surprise that Cornell set himself up for this rebuttal, as his company set up a booth at the conference, and he looks like a douchenozzle marketeer that would spew buzz-words whenever possible. So, we're going to play his game, but with an added twist. Instead of going to a conference with over 10,000 eager vendors to sell you crap that will be obsolete next year, I am only going to use the Denim Group web site. As an added bonus, I am going to try to use pages that use the buzz-word, along with Dan's name. Since he used 'Cloud' four times instead of coming up with other buzz-words (no 'APT', really?), I will even go for four unique references!
