From rforno at infowarrior.org Sat Oct 6 08:42:23 2012 From: rforno at infowarrior.org (Richard Forno) Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2012 09:42:23 -0400 Subject: [sticklist] - RIP Augie, and we thank you Message-ID: <6FB0B969-3547-4D24-8CAA-32D4E0F4FBA1@infowarrior.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 All, This morning I learned that VF's beloved former press shop manager, Agostino Nigro ("Augie"), passed away at home yesterday following several years of declining health. Augie was a prominent figure on post throughout the years making sure faculty and cadet uniforms always fit perfectly and as such indirectly helped craft VF's public image. Even after cadets graduated, they'd make an extra effort to try and find him when returning to post, and always were greeted with a smile, hug, hearty handshake, and laugh --- and as with GEN Sanelli, Augie NEVER forgot a face!! (He could also size you up perfectly on sight during plebe inprocessing, too -- "you 38-long, loose in da seat. Fourty-Four in da chest. NEXT! Where'ya from? You like ice cream? You playing football? Hem good. Okay, you fine. Gogogoggo. NEXT!") He was a VF institution and such a colourful one at that. ;) I think Augie's proudest moment of each school year was standing under the trees at the east side of the Parade Field on Recognition Day, beaming with a father's pride watching his uniforms -- and the cadets in them --- march by for the first Regimental Review of the year. Sure, we looked good; but Augie and his team made us look GREAT. Thanks, Augie. We loved you and miss you. I will post an official obituary and/or service details if/when I receive them. - -- rick '90 '92C sticklist administrator -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.18 (Darwin) Comment: GPGTools - http://gpgtools.org iEYEARECAAYFAlBwNUMACgkQKWZyO29ebPZBdQCgkrxeuVwuMA3Cac4jvSiLBUJp 0zoAoJh4NtXT2PARiwXvhzRBFvkPJ9sI =RAiX -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From rforno at infowarrior.org Sat Oct 6 13:48:49 2012 From: rforno at infowarrior.org (Richard Forno) Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2012 14:48:49 -0400 Subject: [sticklist] - RIP COL Terry Conroy, English Faculty Message-ID: <4D54EDC5-1EF7-4061-9430-1F780A9F1321@infowarrior.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - From Buck '58 on COL, citing a VF FB post: "It is our sad duty to inform you of the passing of COL Terry Conroy, English Faculty, on Friday, October 5th. "Auggie" Nigro, uniforms tailor By Sally A. Downey Inquirer Staff Writer http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/20121009_Agostino_V___quot_Auggie_quot__Nigro__uniforms_tailor.html Agostino V. "Auggie" Nigro, 82, of Valley Forge, who tailored uniforms for cadets at Valley Forge Military Academy and College for 42 years, died Friday, Oct. 5, at home after a 31/2-year battle with colon cancer. Mr. Nigro, who apprenticed as a tailor in Italy, joined the military school's staff in 1962. He customized the uniforms the school ordered, did the alterations, sewed on uniform patches, and even made tablecloths for the dining hall and horse blankets, his daughter, Mariarose Drew, said. When the movie Taps was filmed at Valley Forge's campus in 1980, Mr. Nigro fitted the cast's uniforms, including those worn by stars George C. Scott and Timothy Hutton. He and his family lived in Germantown and then on the campus for 20 years, until he built a home nearby in the early 1990s. Mr. Nigro was the recipient of the academy's Bob Hope Five-Star Award, named in honor of the comedian's commitment to entertaining troops. Other recipients include Presidents Gerald R. Ford and Ronald Reagan, and Gen. William C. Westmoreland. Mr. Nigro also received the school's Order of Anthony Wayne, usually given to cadets or graduates. While working at the academy, Mr. Nigro also did alterations for B. Altman & Co. in St. Davids and later did alterations for the Tiger Shop, a men's apparel store in Wayne. The part-time jobs provided "play money" to spend at Atlantic City casinos and at Liberty Bell and Brandywine racetracks, his daughter said. He loved blackjack, poker, and the ponies, she said. Mr. Nigro grew up in Castelfranci, Italy. In 1950, he immigrated to the United States and joined his father, who was operating dry-cleaning and tailoring shops in Prospect Park and Media. He then worked for the Army Quartermaster Corps and as a baker before going to work at the school. Since 1955, he had been married to Dolores Minetti Nigro, whose parents also emigrated from Castelfranci. In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Nigro is survived by a son, Ralph, and six grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at St. Katherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 104 S. Aberdeen Ave., Wayne. Friends may call from 9. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. Donations may be made to Valley Forge Military Academy, 1001 Eagle Rd., Wayne, Pa. 19087. Contact Sally A.
