Dear Gene --

I am writing to you this morning to let you know that I have tendered  
my resignation as Commandant of Cadets and that after 32 1/2 years of  
service will be leaving Valley Forge. This announcement is clear for  
release after 1130 hours this morning, June 16, 2008. As I explained  
to the President, I have decided to set a new course for the years  
left to me and I have accepted a position as Property Manager for a 35- 
acre estate in Chester County.

I would ask that as the president and head of the Alumni Association  
Board of Directors you would make this information known to my many  
friends and brother alumni in the association. It is important that  
they realize that this decision was made by me without negative  
pressure from the administration. As I wrote in my letter to the  
President, "it was my goal this past year to reaffirm traditional  
standards and operational policies in the Tactical Department ~ ways  
of doing business that have proven effective and efficient. During  
this time I have appreciated your encouragement and support and that  
of the Superintendent as well."

There will be alumni who, for their own reasons, will read negative  
implications into my leaving and blame the administration. Please  
reassure them that such a conclusion would be inaccurate. Wayne Hall  
and Lee Hall have been in agreement on virtually all issues this past  
year and my resignation should in no way be construed as being  
evidence of a "stab in the back" or anything of that nature. I know I  
can count on you to keep the record straight. The future of the school  
in part rests on the fact that our alumni support the course having  
been set. Not to do so puts into serious jeopardy the future of our  
Alma Mater.

Finally, I thank you Gene for your interest and help over the months.  
I knew I could always count on you to muster alumni support for our  
several joint undertakings. Thanks for your wise counsel and personal  
friendship.
