Somali pirates opened fire on the USS Nicholas early this morning as  
the American warship was patrolling west of the Seychelles in the  
Indian Ocean. American forces returned fire and pursued; they  
eventually captured three pirates on the attacking skiff and two more  
aboard a suspected mother ship.
