CollegeInvest sent letters this week to customers who had personal information stored on a computer hard drive that disappeared during a move.
CollegeInvest is the higher education financing resource organization operated by the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
Officials of CollegeInvest say there is little risk of customers' personal information falling into the wrong hands because the data is password protected, and in a format that would be difficult to access.
The hard drive contained information from some, but not all CollegeInvest customers.
The letters are going to all affected customers with information about what data is on the missing hard drive, and information about tools they can use to monitor their credit for unauthorized activity.
A press release says that CollegeInvest moved to a new office recently. The organization hired a relocation firm that offered specialists in moving computer equipment. Collegeinvest found the hard drive was missing when employees unpacked at the new locations.
