[Dataloss] TX: Personal Information Found In McKinney Dumpster

A North Texas business reacted quickly today after learning someone in its office had inadvertently thrown files with personal information in a McKinney trash dumpster. 

A CBS 11 viewer found the documents and emailed us about them.

They contained Social Security Numbers, bank statements, real estate contracts and more.

One of the names on the documents was Herb McJunkin's.  He wasn't very happy about it.  "It should have been shredded," he said.

After we called McKinney Police to tell them about it, the company realized its mistake.  

State law requires companies to properly dispose of their documents.  If they don't, they could face up to $50,000 in fines.  CVS Pharmacy, Radio Shack, E-Z Pawn, and Lifetime Fitness are just some of the companies that have gotten in trouble under the two-year-old law.

If you come across files with personal information in a dumpster, you're urged to call the Texas Attorney General's office.
