Message-ID: http://attrition.org/news/content/08-03-02.001.html A few months ago, we decided to splurge a little bit and whip up some nifty and new Attrition.org gear. The t-shirt idea won out over hats, shoelaces, and bras (d2d's idea), so Lyger was tasked (by Jericho, of course) with designing, purchasing, and distributing said shirts. There were two points to consider during this process: the shirts themselves had to be decent quality (no 80's rock concert crap for us) and the design had to, well, not suck. A quick trip to ShirtMagic later, the following demo was produced: http://attrition.org/news/content/newshirtfrontsmall.jpg http://attrition.org/news/content/newshirtbacksmall.jpg [.] After the initial hand-out, we found that we had an extra shirt in two different sizes: large (L) and extra large (XL). Apacid, of course, wanted to light them on fire so he could inhale the resultant smoke, but we had Cancer Omega give Apacid some fresh smoke from the barrel of his guns. Instead, we've decided to offer the shirts to you, our (usually) friendly site visitors, in the form of a contest: design our next t-shirt, which we would like to have ordered and distributed BEFORE Defcon 16, and we'll send you the remaining two shirts from our initial order, plus the one that you design. As much as we would like to accomodate every request and provide a more complete and more accurate data set, just as the Open Source Vulnerability Database strives for the same goal, sometimes the resources "just aren't there". We generally receive suggestions via email and ponder them while adding new events and updating archived ones, but we had to ask ourselves, "how much can we really do on our own?". The Data Loss Mail List currently has over 1,200 active subscribers and we feel that it has been a valuable source of information regarding data loss events, legislative matters, and technical discussion. With that in mind, it's sometimes frustrating knowing that we could enhance and improve upon the current data set, but simply don't have the time to manage all of it ourselves. So, all of a sudden, *light bulb* - why not ask for a little help? Why not make the database more of a "community project"? Why not have anyone offer suggestions, submit changes, and we can incorporate those changes if they meet general (and informal) standards? Actually, that's what we wanted (and suggested) in the first place. However, much like OSVDB, that hasn't happened. So, instead of just mailing us with ideas for new columns, criteria, and specific field updates, we want to invite everyone to download the current database (which generally updates at least five or six times a week), make changes, and send it back to us with a quick note as to what was changed and why it was changed. The idea of large cesspools we call cities being completely wiped of humanity is great. Let the animals run free, let the buildings fade away. Unfortunately, that movie isn't appealing to the masses without a lone survivor to fight some bad guys, zombies in this case. [...] Rescue Dawn 2006 Perhaps it's my bad memory and childhood being so long ago, but I recall there being a lot more Vietnam/POW flicks from the 80's than we see today. I think time has healed that 'wound' a lot, so we only hear about it from McCain or the occasional movie. Rookie pilot on first mission gets shot down in Vietnam and subsequently captured where he spends years in captivity. [...] Transformers 2007 The car-robot-thingies are more than meets the eye, the movie isn't. Relatively entertaining flick about these neat robot-thingies that come from another planet in search of some relic that crashed into our own very Earth. Suspending disbelief and accepting that is easy, but getting over the rest of it may be problematic. Message-ID: http://attrition.org/security/rant/z/rapid7.html Tue Mar 18 16:10:57 EST 2008 d2d You are a security vendor. You sell the mightiest security doohickey the world has ever seen. It does it all, including "...ensuring your network is safe from hackers..." and amazingly it "...scans for Web site and database vulnerabilities that hackers can use to capture credit card information without you being aware". Since your doohickey does what no others have ever successfully managed to do, you can tout your client list proudly, and pimp your customer implementations liberally. UNTIL... One of your customers joins the etiolated top 10 with a massive hacker perpetrated data loss incident. OUCH. While The Illusionist is more of a love story, The Prestige is more of a competition between two men for glory and the prestige of being the best magician in the world. Set in 1890's England, the movie opens with a narration of Cutter (Michael Caine) explaining the three parts of a magic trick: The Pledge, where the magician makes a promise to the audience to do something, The Turn, where the magician turns from the audience and performs acts on The Pledge, and finally The Prestige, where the magician makes good on the Pledge and the stunned audience erupts into thunderous applause. So here comes my prayer that belief be suspended to a high degree. While I loved this film and was surprised by the ending, upon reviewing the film to discover where I had missed things, I also allowed my mind to overanalyze the plot and then began to see where things couldn't, wouldn't, or shouldn't have happened the way they did in the movie. That being said, walk in to the film just like you would any other magic performance, knowing that you are going to be fooled, but not knowing how you're going to be fooled. [...]
