Pretty box cover, terrible flick. Is it possible Ed O’Neil’s performance was the best of the lot? This movie sucked to the point of embarrassment. Val Kilmer should hang it up. Everything about this movie was sorry. Sorry writing, sorry acting, sorry plot, sorry casting, sheesh! Whisky Tango Foxtrot? Free-wheeling federal agent (Kilmer) gets tasked to locate and rescue the kidnapped daughter of a high-profile, high-ranking, well-known politician, with an obvious surprise in store: Gasp! It's the President's Daughter! Oh Nohs!!1 (Not this shit again...) OK, maybe one or two good twists, but honestly, where's the fucking beef? An early appearance by Kristen Bell on the silver screen. This film is still better than Pulse. We can only hope the studios will give her better material.

Kaena: The Prophecy

2003

How disturbing is it when the low-to-mid-budget animated films have more plot, greater depth, and more believable performances that the big-budget suckathons? Now, Kaena isn't exactly Oscar-material, but it is a fun flick. And hey, Kristen Dunst. I rest my case. A lone heroine defies culture and authority to get to the root (pun intended) of why her 'world' is dying. A dark secret, a malicious agenda, and pretty colors. Possibly one of Dunst’s best performances, and it’s just her voice. No t-shirt, no rain, no kissing Spiderman. Hmmm. Anyhow, if you’re fan of Anime, or the New Jersey native, this is a good choice.

Secondhand Lions

2003

From IMDB: A coming-of-age story about a shy, young boy sent by his irresponsible mother to spend the summer with his wealthy, eccentric uncles in Texas. No one can explain how this ended up in my DVD player, or how it managed to keep my attention. I was in the mood for Die Hard 8 - Jesus, Not Again, and I nearly shut it off when I saw Robert Duvall simultaneously sleep-walking and sword-fighting with a plunger. </shudder> Haley Joel Osmond, well, he’s almost tolerable. Duvall and Michael Caine are good. Kyra Sedgwick is despicable—her performance is flawless. Emmanuelle Vaugier is drop-dead, stop-the-presses, slap-your-dingo gorgeous. I am spending my vacation in Canada. This is probably better described as a feel-good date-movie, but it deserves a look regardless of whatever label gets slapped on it.

The Phantom of the Opera

2004

Joel Schumaker has done the impossible, taken one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever seen, and masterfully brought it to the silver screen. Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler are both excellent, and excellent together. Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, Simon Callow, Ciarán Hinds, yeah, even Minnie Driver--great cast. Great cast, great sets--the chandelier fall was spec-fucking-tacular, especially for something they basically did in one take. Endless comparisons between the motion picture and various stage versions are inevitable. Fuck them. This film rocks. Equally good is the soundtrack. Yes, I bought it. Yes, it's mesmerizing. No, I'm not on crack. Perfect material for crashing your friend's home theater.
