Subject: Hackers threaten nasty trick-or-treat

Does the thought of Halloween scare you? Well hackers recently made their
mark on the Census 2000 Web site by attempting to frighten and intimidate
site visitors claiming they will hack five sites a day until Halloween in
support of Napster.

It seems a fact of Internet life that if someone wants to crack and deface a
site he or she will. Acknowledging this truth, Gilian Technologies Inc. has
developed ExitControl technology which guarantees Web site content remains
authentic after an intrusion. Gilian provides this security with its
patented G-Server. The G-Server remains transparent and independent on the
network, constantly ready to verify Web site content before it is published
to the Internet. Checking ID's close to the speed of light, it verifies
content using digital signatures composed of mathematical algorithms and
only lets genuine content pass to the Internet. If a discrepancy is found
in an outbound page, a genuine page is immediately sent in its place without
a perceivable delay.

Bottom line, when a hacker does get through the firewall, Gilian's G-Server
ensures the alterations they make never reach the public Internet. If there
are any content discrepancies, the G-Server publishes an authentic Web page
and the Web administrator is immediately alerted to the attack and its exact
location. This ensures the only trick that occurs on Halloween is when your
neighbor's kid eggs your house!

Gilian CEO Rafael Feitelberg, will be glad to discuss the necessity of
ExitControl technology as an integral component in computer security.

Please call me if you would like to contact Rafael.

Thank You,

Brigit Blomme

This is unsolicited SPAM from PRStrategy on behalf of Gilian Technologies.

Worse, this is blatant ambulence chasing in the security industry. I find
it very amusing that you didn't list the source of your information. How
did you find out that this hacker would deface five sites a day until
Halloween? You found out from Attrition.org one way or another. Yet you
give no credit to us.. instead, you spam us with your crappy product
advertisements.

Relying on unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail is unprofessional and a
criminal act in many areas.

As a result, we will be adding you to our Errata section
(http://www.attrition.org/errata/), so that security professionals and
potential clients can see how you operate, and how you solicit business.

Subject: Greatest Apologies

To whom it may concern:

I would like to apologize for the email you received. It was in no way
intended to be spam. It was an email media pitch intended to inform
industry press of the severity of recent and upcoming hacks.
As a practice, we do not rely on unsolicited bulk commercial email. Instead,
we build our media lists very professionally, using existing databases and
qualifying all media contacts to ensure they are covering the security
industry. Everyone that receives an email from us covers the security
industry. In this instance, a mistake was made. Attrition.org was added
to our media list in error. For this we apologize.

But, on a more positive note. In all of our media efforts, we give credit
to attrition.org at every chance. For example, a reporter at a large West
Coast Daily publication asked us where we find out about so many hacks.
We told him to visit attrition.org, and now he receives emails daily from
your site.

We would very much like to discuss improving our relationship with, and
advocacy for, attrition.org, not ending it on a bad note.

Kind regards,
