According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Peter Williams, an Australian national, "pleaded to two counts of theft of trade secrets. The material, stolen over a three-year period from the U.S. defense contractor where he worked, was comprised of national-security focused software that included at least eight sensitive and protected cyber-exploit components. Those components were meant to be sold exclusively to the U.S. government and select allies. Williams sold the trade secrets to a Russian cyber-tools broker that publicly advertises itself as a reseller of cyber exploits to various customers, including the Russian government.
Williams, a former General Manager of defense contractor L3Harris’s cyber subsidiary Trenchant, "betrayed .. the Five Eye countries when he sold eight zero-day exploits to a Russian exploit broker. He had originally been ordered to pay $1.3 million in restitution as part of his plea deal but that was increased to $10 million more bringing restitution to $11.3 million. Additionally, he was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison along with three years of probation after release. After release he may be deported to Australia.
