Blue Jasmine (2013)

Medium: Movie (Netflix)

Rating: 4 / 5 No likeable characters, but somehow a likeable movie

This movie can probably serve as a cautionary tale for new adults. It's messy and uncomfortable. Half of the characters are cheating on their SO's and the other half are assholes that you're glad got cheated on. Most of us have either been there, or been close enough to get a good whiff of it. There's something for everyone - alcoholism, mental illness, divorce, and politicians.

But there's a certain joi de vivre charm to it. Wealthy people can be just as shitty as poor people. And Andrew Dice Clay can play and underdog better than you think. You dislike these people, but you feel for them, and you find yourself hoping they eventually pull it together and manage to win one. The cast turns in a staggeringly good performance, right down to the angst-filled son. And they should, because they are all top-shelf performers.

I liked it. I think you will too.

The Vault (2021)

Medium: Movie (Netflix)

Rating: 3 / 5 you've been in this vault before

How many bank vault heist movies are there? Yeah, a lot. So it's a challenge to make a new one that is interesting. In this case, it is mildly interesting as the "unbeatable" vault is beaten of course, but at the cost of physics and continuity. When you can break those, the possibilities are endless. Overall not a bad movie, but not particularly that good either. Good "turn brain off" fodder to fall asleep to though.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

Medium: Movie (Netflix)

Rating: 2 / 5 tough to swallow

This is a prime example of stacking a movie full of big names that have impressive careers and amazing roles in the past, only to have it fall flat. Despite the all-star cast, it just doesn't work well because they are given such simple, boring dialogue and no room to develop a character. Without compelling characters and no emotional investment, who cares what happens? Sure, there are a few good gunplay scenes, but not many given the movie is squarely centered around that premise. There is some good humor, but not enough to make up for the rest of the flop. What a shame.

Candyman (2021)

Totally sweet. But you may want to re-watch or at least re-read the wikipedia on the original from 1992, which this was apparently a direct sequel too and I didn't realize that. Has much tie-ins.
