God Bless America
Like most people I was both shocked and saddened by the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. Also like most people I wished it was a horrible dream and eventually I would wake up from it. This type of thing just does not happen in the United States. Well it has been over 96 hours and I have come to realize that it is indeed reality. The images of those planes smashing into the sides of the World Trade Center are forever burned into my mind. What happened during the waking hours of that day have forever changed my views about the world we live in. I will always have more questions than I have answers. I will never understand how human beings can do this to each other. Yes, we will recover but i suspect the America we knew before will never be the same. It is unfortunate that it has taken a catastrophe of this magnitude to bring the citizens of the United States together, or should I say most people. Most people with at least an ounce of common sense and compassion have been touched by this tragedy, if not affected either directly or indirectly. Then there is the fringe of our population that makes me disgusted to be a member of the human race. Within two hours of the first attack, sick bastards were trying to cash in on this tragedy by selling World Trade Center memorabilia on eBay. One person was brazen enough to try and sell a videotape of live CNN footage. It boggles the mind how someone could try and cash in off something like this. This is another one of those things that I just cannot understand. Most news coverage has irresponsibly aired footage of Palestinians cheering in the streets after the attacks. While this does sicken me, it does not represent the views of the population of Palestine, nor any Middle Eastern country for that matter. Airing this footage does nothing more than stir up racist sentiments. Airing that footage on the news over and over again served absolutely no purpose. We cannot blame the actions of a handful of fanatics on people living within the United States based upon the fact that they may be of the same nationality as the terrorists. Now is the time to help each other heal, not hate each other. On Tuesday, the Orange County Register displayed a half-page picture of people jumping from the WTC. What purpose did this serve? I am all for freedom of the press and free speech put this really pushes the envelope of bad taste. Once again, disturbing images like this do nothing but to stir up anger. In closing I would like to say that my heart goes out to the families of those who were affected directly and indirectly from this cowardly act. My appreciation goes out to the rescue workers, firemen, and policemen who have bravely and selflessly risked and given their lives to save the lives of others. Some may say they were just doing their job but it takes a special person to risk their own life to save that of a complete stranger. My thoughts are with you.
