The csetup program (/usr/Cadmin/bin/csetup) is a graphical system and network setup and configuration program. The program is designed to be used by the system root user and other user accounts that have been designed as "privileged users" per the objectserver and cpeople program. The csetup program is setuid root to assist "privileged users" in doing tasks requiring root priviledges. It is possible to configure the csetup program to run in a debug mode. As part of this debug mode a logging file is created. Since the csetup program is run setuid, this file creation becomes a security vulnerability with the possibility to create or overwrite files. Silicon Graphics Inc. has investigated the issue and recommends the following solutions for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems running IRIX versions 5.x, 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.1, 6.2. This issue has been corrected in IRIX 6.3 and 6.4 and will be corrected in future IRIX releases. - --------------- - ---- Impact --- - --------------- The csetup program is found installed by default on all IRIX 5.x, 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.1, 6.2 systems. Root permissions can be obtained on any system which has the vulnerable /usr/Cadmin/bin/csetup program installed. Exploitation of this vulnerability requires access to an established account on the system. Provided with an established account, the vulnerability can be exploited locally or remotely. This issue has been publically disclosed in several public forums including the BUGTRAQ mailing list. - --------------------------- - ---- Temporary Solution --- - --------------------------- Although patches are available for this issue, it is realized that there may be situations where installing the patches immediately many not be possible. The steps below can be used as a temporary workaround until patches can be installed. 1) Become the root user on the system. % /bin/su - Password: # 2) Change the setuid root permissions on the programs of concern. # /bin/chmod u-s /usr/Cadmin/bin/csetup ************ *** NOTE *** ************ Removing the setuid root permissions from the csetup program will prevent non-root users from using the csetup for setup and configuration operations.
