I was thinking the same thing... we could also count them on a per
target basis and put out a total when we report # of tests run and #
of findings, e.g.:
+ 3826 items checked, 39 item(s) reported, 22 errors testing host

instead of:
+ 3826 items checked: 39 item(s) reported on remote host

That way it's always there in case someone wants to re-run, or the
number is exceptionally high.
