5th February -- Kashmir solidarity day

Kashmir solidarity day is being observed on 5th February in different parts of the world including Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. On this day rallies, demonstrations, seminars and conferences will be held at different places to highlight the various aspects of Kashmir freedom struggle.

Kashmir being an international dispute and an oldest unresolved conflict on UN agenda needs a dispassionate and an objective assessment on this day. Nuclearisation of the subcontinent and subsequent confrontation at Kargil heights between the two neighbours India and Pakistan has signaled to the international community that peace in South Asia is gravely threatened if the core issue of Kashmir is not resolved in accordance with the wishes of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. The people living in the UN mandated disputed territory of Jammu & Kashmir are an integral component of the global family. As such the international community should fulfill its obligations towards their fellow humans in Kashmir. A conducive climate needs to be generated for eliminating the excesses and atrocities on them. The world community will owe an explanation to the contemporary and future historian if it fails to take a humanitarian cognizance of the prevailing situation in Kashmir.

Kashmir has been converted into a towering inferno with the unprecedented ruthless violations and repression of all human rights through naked use of force by the military and its civilian agents.

An Indian women's team led by Rita Dewan was on a fact finding mission to Kashmir. An extract from this teams eyewitness report says, "Life itself is not secure… the young men walks in fear, fear of being named a suspect or militant, picked up interrogated, tortured, killed. The women live in fear of humiliation, harassment, molestation, rape. Families live in fear of crackdowns, raids, searches. The looting of household goods is common. The forces can enter homes, shops, schools, hospitals at any time without warning or restriction. The invasion of privacy is almost total."

What Human Rights Watch August 1994, vol. 6, no.8 said a few years ago is correct even today. For their part, Indian troops continue to summarily execute detainees, kill civilians in reprisal attacks and burn down neighbourhoods and villages as a collective punishment for those suspected of supporting the militants…. Torture also continues to be routine. Human rights groups have compiled a list of over fifty-five interrogation centres where detainees are kept in unacknowledged detention and tortured. The security forces routinely defy court orders to produce the detainees and several thousand habeas corpus petitions filed in these cases remain pending without result according to Jammu & Kashmir Bar Association. All of these actions are in clear violation of the international covenant on civil and political rights to which India is a party. Although government claims to have punished security personnel for abuses, to Human Rights Watch/Asia's knowledge not a single soldier has been prosecuted for the murder or torture of a detainee."

The Indian troops on 10th January 2000 at around 5 p.m. torched 87 shops and 15 residential houses at Pattan, highway town of Baramulla district, a twelve year old boy was also killed. It has been phenomenal that the revengeful Indian forces usually target the non combatant civilians and they exhibit an inhuman behaviour.

Commenting on the tragedy at Pattan, Kashmir Times Jammu writes in its editorial note "while they fail to apprehend the militants their anger is turned against the peaceful citizens and as a matter of revenge the forces open the mouths of their guns to fire at citizens or set their houses and shops ablaze… the Pattan incident calls for a high level independent probe followed by stringent action against the culprits."

A Kashmiri poet Parwaz Naqash has summed up the behaviour of Indian occupation authority in the following verses:

"See the dance of death & destruction

Smell the stench of charred human flesh

Come to Kashmir

When the mangled bodies of newly born babies bear testimony

To man's cruelty to man

Where young girls are raped, and

Their bosoms ripped apart

Where it is a crime to be young

Because if you are young

You are fit to be slain."
