Gap owners donate $15 million in seed money to expand charter school program
Posted by phutureboy on Thursday, August 17 @ 23:01:40 EDT (readed: 8 times - hits: 0)
    Education

Donald and Doris Fisher, owners of the Gap clothing chain, have given $15 million in seed money to the newly-formed KIPP Foundation to spread a successful charter school program to urban centers across the U.S. KIPP, which stands for Knowledge is Power Program, was founded by Michael Feinberg and David Levin, and operates widely-acclaimed middle schools in Houston, Texas and Bronx, NYC.

The article mentions several other growing national networks of charter schools, private schools and school management companies including Edison Schools, Success For All, Hirsch Core Knowledge schools, Thomas Sizer's Coalition of Essential Schools, and Replications, Inc. Add to that the firestorm over Proposition 38 (vouchers) in California, and it seems to me that some big changes are in store for our country's K-12 education system.

How would the Founding Fathers fare in 2000 elections?

    2000 U.S. Political Campaigns

I saw an interesting story over on Liberty Rally that suggests that the Founding Fathers would be overwhelmingly defeated if they were to run for office today. The original article that Liberty Rally linked to is located here on Jewish World Review. It is chock full of quotes that illustrate how radically different the political climate was two centuries ago, and how James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and Franklin Pierce would likely be very unpopular candidates in the year 2000.

CATO disputes propose campaign finance reforms
Posted by phutureboy on Thursday, August 17 @ 17:42:44 EDT (readed: 7 times - hits: 0)
    2000 U.S. Political Campaigns

In yesterday's CATO commentary, Doug Bandow disputes the need for campaign finance reform, saying that the proposed reforms are worse than the current system. He suggests that "the right reform is to drop all rules except full disclosure."

This makes sense to me. The reform I would like to see most is the elimination of federal matching funds. What does everyone else think?

Survey says: voters want open debates, Howell has 16% support
Posted by phutureboy on Tuesday, August 15 @ 18:35:26 EDT (readed: 42 times - hits: 0)
    2000 U.S. Political Campaigns

Rasmussen Research is reporting that a plurality of U.S. voters would like third party candidates Pat Buchanan, Ralph Nader, Harry Browne, and Howard Phillips to be included in the televised Presidential Debates. 46% said yes, 37% said no, and 16% were not sure.

In another recent survey, Rasmussen reports that Libertarian Senatorial candidate Carla Howell is polling at 16% against Ted Kennedy, and 'could be in a position to achieve one of the largest vote totals ever achieved by a Libertarian candidate'.

AOL reaping what it has sown?
Posted by phutureboy on Monday, August 14 @ 22:35:30 EDT (readed: 5 times - hits: 0)
    Economic and Monetary Policy

The most recent edition of the Heartland Institute's "Intellectual Ammunition" features an article by Dave Kopel taking AOL to task for using the power of government against its business rivals, and suggesting that it is 'poetic justice' that the FTC is now conducting an antitrust inquiry into its merger with Time Warner, and the companies' instant messenging and cable broadband services.

Guess the shoe's on the other foot now, huh Mr. Case?

Ohio court says city can't sue gun manufacturers
Posted by phutureboy on Monday, August 14 @ 22:11:10 EDT (readed: 20 times - hits: 0)
    Gun Control

An Ohio appeals court has upheld a judge's decision to throw out a suit by the city of Cincinnati seeking to recover millions of dollars from gun manufacturers. The court's decision likened the city suit to the "absurdity" of suing the makers of matches because of losses from arson.

    Reform Party convention in chaos
Posted by phutureboy on Saturday, August 12 @ 02:13:49 EDT (readed: 9 times - hits: 0)
    2000 U.S. Political Campaigns

The Reform Party convention in Long Beach, CA is turning out to be quite a weird event, more like WWF pro wrestling than a political event. Where's Jesse Ventura when you need him the most?

In two separate but somewhat parallel conventions across the street from each other, both John Hagelin and Pat Buchanan have been nominated as the party's presidential candidate by rival factions. This is all very surreal - it's like some old Star Trek movie where they discover parallel worlds and there are two Captain Kirks running for president. It makes the LP seem remarkably unified in comparison.

Turning point in the War on Drugs?
Posted by phutureboy on Saturday, August 12 @ 01:36:19 EDT (readed: 10 times - hits: 0)
    War on Drugs

Does it mean we've reached a turning point in the War on Drugs when Jesse Jackson flails his arms and rails against it? That's what happened at the recent Shadow Convention in Philadelphia, which devoted a whole day to the failure of drug prohibition. Salon.com has coverage, including a Shadow Convention report by Arianna Huffington, and Yet Another Story about Republican lawmakers who are parting with their colleagues and condemning the failed experiment.

Looking back at a charter school's first year
Posted by phutureboy on Thursday, August 10 @ 16:51:52 EDT (readed: 24 times - hits: 0)
    Education

This New York Times story (free reg req'd) takes a look back at the first year of Harlem's Sisulu Children's Academy, one of the first charter schools in New York City. It sounds like it went pretty well - 88 out of 90 parents who responded to a school survey said the school was either a 'little' or 'a lot' better than nearby public schools - however the company managing the school has yet to break even.
