The Amateur Radio Listening Post: Java Control

brought to you by the NIH Radio Amateur Club

News, announcements, and other new features are listed on the main Listening Post web page. If you link directly to this Java page, don't forget to check out the main page from time to time.

3 August 1999:

The old name of this web server (nihac.info.nih.gov) will be discontinued.  Please use the newer name: speed.nimh.nih.gov.

Instructions:

Choose an audio streaming method

Click on either the Speak Freely or RealAudio buttons.  If you choose Speak Freely, the server will connect to your machine when you select a frequency.  Be sure to have your Speak Freely program running before then.  If you choose RealAudio, your player should start up immediately and the audio should arrive at your computer about 10 seconds later.  Speak Freely users: remember to Disconnect when you are done listening to the receiver.

Choose a frequency

Double click on the service of your choice.  Use the scroll bar on the right to see all the entries.

Enter a frequency in megahertz.  Remember, this radio does not go below 25 MHz or above 1.0 GHz.   Select a mode, then click on the "Manual Enter" button. Do not use the Description box.

After you have selected a frequency, you can tune up or down the band by entering a frequency step size and clicking on the UP or DOWN buttons.  The frequency step size is in MHz, so choose .001 if you want to move in 1 KHz steps.

Add new entries to the frequency list

You can now customize the frequency list. To add an item, start with a manual frequency entry.  However, instead of clicking on the Manual button, type a description into the "Description" box.  Hit <enter> after typing the name.  Bingo, the new entry appears on the top of the frequency list.  You must have "cookies" enabled on your browser.   Your custom entries are stored in a cookie, and will be preserved when you visit again from the same machine

An entry can be deleted by using a minus sign in the description box.

Note: If this applet does not update properly and you are using Netscape, choose "options/network preferences" from the menu. Select "verify documents" "every time". Then reload the page. (Your browser should no longer require the above changes thanks to some new Java code!)

(Special thanks to Stewart Nelson, KK7KA, for adding new features to this Java applet.)
