TIMOR: Lisbon demands for an immediate intervention of the United Nations

 

The Mayor in Office of the Lisbon City Council, Vasco Franco, adressed today to the General Secretary and to the President of the Security Council of the United Nations, appealling for an urgent and effective intervention that finishes the massacre of the population in Timor Loro Sae, avoiding the ethnic cleaning in course with the connivance of the indonesian army.

Vasco Franco adressed also to the president of Indonesia, apealling for the inmediate acceptance of a force from the United Nations in Timor.

Some letters have been also adressed to the mayors of capitals and cities all over the world with wich Lisbon is related to, denouncing the situation and asking to associate themselves with our apeal near the United Nations and Indonesia.

Further to a meeting where every parties of this municipality were represented, it was decided to give logistical support to the demonstration for Timor called for today (07/09/99), at 18h30, near the ONU (Latino Coelho Street) as well as financial support to the mission set up by AMI to help the refugees in Timor.

The Lisbon City Council will contact as well the organizations from Timor based in Lisboa, offering support for the presentation of a complaint in the International Court of the Hague.

To sign this tragical situation, the flag of the municipality will be hold at half mast in the municipal buildings and the sentence TIMOR: Lisboa demands for an immediate intervention of the United Nations will be posted all over the City.

Finally, the Lisbon City Council will open a page in the Internet, in portuguese, english and spanish, denouncing the situation and apealling to put international presure on the United Nations and Indonesia.
