MILWAUKEE,
WI, November 23, 1999 ... Indianapolis Colts’ Edgerrin
James, who rushed for a career-high 152 yards and scored three
touchdowns in the Colts’ 44-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles
on Sunday, was named the Miller
Lite NFL Player of the Week for Week Eleven. This is the first
time in James’ career that he has won the award.
The
rookie from Miami (Fla.) is the first rookie to win the award since
Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillon captured the honor in
Week 15 of the 1997 season. He is the first Colt to win the Miller
Lite Player of the Week since Jim Harbaugh in Week 16 of the 1997
season. James’ 152-yard rushing performance gave him 1,006 yards for
the season, which is first in the AFC.
The
Miller Lite NFL Player of the Week program runs through all 17 weeks
of the regular season. Each
week, a player from each of the 31 teams is nominated by media viewing
NFL games. The weekly national winner is ultimately selected by a
panel of seven media veterans.
James
joins this season’s Miller Lite NFL Player of the Week award
winners: Cris Carter, Minnesota Vikings (Week 10), Sam Madison, Miami
Dolphins (Week 9), Steve McNair, Tennessee Titans (Week 8), Rich
Gannon, Oakland Raiders (Week 7), Damon Huard, Miami Dolphins (Week
6), Isaac Bruce, St. Louis Rams (Week 5), Az-Zahir Hakim, St. Louis
Rams (Week 4), Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers (Week 3), Drew Bledsoe,
New England Patriots (Week 2) and Troy Aikman, Dallas Cowboys (Week
1).
This
season, Miller has pledged more than $130,000 to local charities for
the 1999 season
and as culmination to the weekly program, Miller Lite will name the
Player of the Year during the week prior to Super Bowl XXXIV.
Miller Lite will donate $25,000 in the Player of the Year’s
name to the charity of his choice. Miller Lite has donated more than
$1 million through the eleven-year Player of the Year program.
At
the conclusion of the regular season, six Miller Lite NFL Player of
the Year candidates will be chosen from among the weekly nominees.
From the six finalists, a committee of media representatives from each
NFL market will elect the Miller Lite NFL Player of the Year. The
voting program is coordinated by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
