Pakistan Warns Against India's Non-Cooperation On Disarmament

Pakistan warned on Friday that a "massive nuclear arms race"
could still erupt in South Asia due to India's lack of cooperation
on nuclear disarmament.
Ambassador Shaukat Umer, attending a conference on the CTBT
nuclear treaty in Vienna, warned that Islamabad may be forced to
"take appropriate action" to boost its nuclear credibility "if India is
left unchecked." He called on world leaders specifically to press India
over its nuclear plans, contained in a "nuclear doctrine" proposed by
New Delhi following last year's tit-for-tat nuclear tests by
two countries.
"The international community must call upon India to give unequivocal
assurance against the implementation of the proposed doctrine which
threatens to unleash a massive nuclear arms race in South Asia and
will create a hair-trigger security environment," he said, adding:
"If the Indian nuclear doctrine remains unchallanged and is not explicitly
disavowed, Pakistan would be required to take appropriate action
to preserve the credibility of its nuclear deterence."
