Title: Smile, Your're Traveling - Black Coffee Blues Part III
Author: Henry Rollins
Publisher: 2.13.61
So what do you do when you have 550 thousand frequent flyer miles and
nothing to do for a while? You travel. This book is comprised of more of
Henry Rollins journal entries from 1997 and 1998 while traveling and burning
those frequent flyer miles and while on tour, doing both spoken word
performances and fronting for The Rollins Band. Like most of Rollins books,
as long as you can deal with his occasional whining and bitching, it is a
very good book. Intresting was at the beginning of the book where Rollins
was traveling through Africa by himself just "checking out the sites". No
four-star hotels, no hot water, and rarely any good coffee which is one of
Henry's favorite foods.
One thing I can say about Henry Rollins is that he writes both honestly
about the things he cares about and the things he hates. During this time
Henry got to spend some time with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath who are
one of his favorite bands. The excitement that he writes with almost reminds
you of a little kid meeting a baseball player or some other hero for the
first time. On the other hand he also discusses how much he hates bands like
U2 and Cheryl Crow. he also shares his love for jazz music, especially that
of John Coltrane which would probably suprise some people.
Also shared is Henry's inability to deal with fans. On one hand he loves his
fans but on the other hand he hates them. He is usually pretty rude to
people who come up to him after a show or spot him walking down the street
and that can get a little annoying at times. I will never understand people
who go into a business that is based on fan loyalty, then bitch when they
can't walk down the street without being recognized.
