Coming to Campus : University of Vermont Unknown Author - www.uvm.edu 6/1/05 1 out of every 10 notebook (Laptop) computers will be stolen within the first 12 months of purchase. 90% of them will never be recovered. -FBI Statistic- Most thefts on a college or university campus happen for 2 reasons: 1. A complacent attitude: " It won't happen to me" or "I am already careful". 2. A false sense of security: "I feel safe in my room or the library-I'm on a college campus, not some big city" FACT: Most thefts are a crime of opportunity. Here are some of the ways to reduce that opportunity: 1. Make use of a deterrent device to help secure your computer. Invest in a cable lock, tracking software, or anything else that acts as a deterrent to theft. 2. Don't leave your computer unattended, even for just a few minutes. Even leaving your room unlocked to go down the hall can provide somebody with enough time to get in and out. Some Anti-Theft Devices To Consider: * Tracking software is one of the most effective ways to combat computer theft. It is a two pronged system that includes the purchasing of an annual membership with a company who will then provide the computer owner with software to download. Once this software is installed the location of the computer can be tracked by the company in the event that the computer is ever stolen and connected online. Check out Police Service website for more informaiton. * Cable locks are an excellent deterrent against theft. The cables feature a loop and a locking head on a 6 foot cable, which loops around a permanent fixture such as a desk and fastens to the computer by way of the security slot built into the computer's s casing. * These anti-theft devices can be found at many places where computers are sold, online, or by looking at UVM Police Service's website.
